No need to ponder. It is a marketable skill. As can be seen by all the companies crying out for good perl people. They might not, as you said, be looking in Massatoomanyletters and environs, but they're looking in lots of other places. So perhaps a more useful question for you would be why *your local area* isn't doing so well.
