Whereas they *do* require a great deal of effort with an IDE. All the
IDEs I've seen recently were sufficiently opaque (not to mention taking
far too long to load and being slow and clunky to navigate around) that
I couldn't bear to actually write code in them.
xterms, search.cpan.org, and an editor are all the IDE I need*. They're
all I *want*.
* for the pedants in the audience, I also need a keyboard, a window
manager, facilities for making tea, a hideously scarred man-servant,
etc
