It's been almost a decade for me, but I liked The Java Programming
Language by James Gosling and Ken Arnold. It was of nearly equal
quality to the similarly titled C and C++ texts by those languages'
creators. The fourth edition seems to weigh in at 500 some pages now,
which is longer than the edition I have, but not horrible.
