I also would suggest Bruce Eckle's "Thinking in Java" - it's in the
4th edition now, but on his website (http://www.mindviewinc.com/Index.php)
all the previous editions are available for free download, and Java hasn't
changed that much since he had version 3 out. The book is written for
folks moving from C or C++ to Java, and does a nice job of explaining how
constructs and ideas translate between the languages.
If you decide to look for a class, there will be a good one offered
this fall at Harvard Extension, CSCI E-160 (Java for Distributed
Computing), which is aimed at programmers with production experience in
other languages who want to move into Java. I can highly recommend it
(I've taken it).

That time has finally come for me that all good perl hackers dread -- being

I've found a few that make a glancing blow, but nothing yet that really hits
the nail on the head.

PS Thanks to Rob Levy for his timely note on Clojure recently. Just the
ticket to add some interest to what otherwise shapes up as a rather stifling
prospect.
