Hi jean. There is no need to buy a card reader to perform a
BrailleNote
mPower upgrade. You may find one useful for other purposes, but you
can
download the upgrade on your BrailleNote mPower to an appropriately
formatted SD card, and perform the upgrade. We've made the process
extremely smooth and simple, as a few listers have already pointed
out.
Just while I'm writing on this subject, a couple of other comments.
Firstly, HumanWare can and does sell appropriate SD cards for the
upgrade
process, but I think it's fair to say that you're not going to get the
best
deal on price from us. We just don't have enough demand to buy these
cards
in the tens of thousands such as a big chain would buy. Buying in
those
quantities makes a huge difference in terms of the price they pay,
which
they can then pass onto you.
Finally, I would just gently remind the list that some weeks ago, I
did
explain that an SD card would be required to update the software in
BrailleNote and VoiceNote mPower. This will be necessary for all
updates,
not just this one.

I don't understand. First, I'm an mPower user and I would also have
to
purchase an SD card and a card reader to to an upgrade. So it's not
just the old consumer who has to fork out more.
But what do you mean that the card should be small, that if it is
larger
than 128 Meg that the upgrade won't work? Why would the size matter?

Ok, so the old consumers are taking the heat!
And, for all of you who purchase SD cards in order to be able to
update
your Mpowers, make sure that the SD card you purchase is small, say
128
megabytes. Otherwise, the update still won't work.

Look, there's no way to make everyone happy with this. You have to
pick
one,
so it's a question of screwing over the new consumer or screwing over
the
old one? There really isn't another option in this situation. They
appear to
have chosen to screw over hte old one. I was going to buy an SD card
anyway.

Jonathan Mosen stated that one of the reasons is that SD cards are
currently the least expensive storage alternative. However, if you
already have CF cards with which you're happy, then the SD is no
longer
the least expensive way to go. Why? Because you've already got CF
cards that you can't use to update your Mpower, and the money has
already long been spent on those cards. But, since you have to
purchase
an SD card, now you're spending money you wouldn't have had to spend
were this not an upgrade requirement.

Hi Peggy,
Well, I'll throw in my 2 cents here. Having support for an SD card is
great. However, I'd much prefer to see it as an option, not a
requirement.
Since the mPower has a flash slot, and many of us have flash cards
that
we
used in the classic units, I'm trying to understand why the designers
of
the
mPower designed a unit that supports flash cards but requires SD cards
for
any upgrades? This came up before with the SMA upgrades, and I know
it
was
required for those as well, but I'm still struggling with the
rationale
for
this apparent requirement.
Best Regards,
Les

I don't have a problem with getting an SD card; it's just that after
buying
the mPower transplant, a new computer, and two large-sized compact
flash
cards (my preferred type of card), I hadn't planned on making any more
purchases for a while. But if it's necessary to have an SD card, I
guess
that's what I'll need to do.

Peggy,
I assume, as it's available for download, that it's a free patch and
therefore it would be to your advantage to download and pop it on an
SD
card. (I didn't have one until very recently either but I don't
regret
the outlay.)

Subject: [Braillenote] Patch for the mPower
Hi, all. I just went to the website to read about the patch for the
mPower, and saw that it requires an SD card, which I don't have. So
does that mean that in order to download any future upgrades I'll need
to first buy an SD card, or will Humanware be sending out the patch on
an SD card to those of us with mPowers, or what?
Peggy <disappointed that she can't download the patch, although she
hasn't needed it yet anyway>
