I bet hardly anyone on this list actually uses access, but there are a lot of people making databases for keybase. Excel is expensive because it is part of Office, so many that don't use it might not because of the expense. It really doesn't take a genius to use excel, though it could require the mind of a genius to create and use some of the spreadsheets people have worked with.

I use excel for calculations and for the organized layout of information, but I haven't used it for anything financial since my accounting class. I have no intention of ever using financial software if i can help it, but I like spreadsheets. I'm not a typical user, that's for sure, but often I think the biggest problem with people learning to do anything is not having the tools available all the time, and a mental block and other people constantly telling them everything is too hard.

My concern is now many blind people really know how to use excel?
There are a few on this list, but considering the entire group of users who
use Braille note products, how many would be able to benefit from there
sources that it would take to create a pocket excel for the bn family as
opposed to some other stand alone financial program such as a checkbook
  program?
I would bet that most of their users wouldn't have a clue how to get around
  excel.
