Terri,
It isn't effective to turn the volume to the max because all you will get is air noise and very little that is audible, which is very ironic. I would suggest just playing with the settings until you find an adaquate setting that suits you. I have been able to keep the dfault bit rate and sampling frequency and get rid of almost all of the air noise with still recording with very little memory usage.
Just play with it.
