I was just going to let it run down before recalibrating but it kept telling
me I had to recalibrate.   Hmmm.

I think the battery has to be pretty well discharged before you can start
the recalibration process.  Seems to me I remember reading that somewhere. 
So perhaps because you started with a full charge, the system didn't know
what you were doing?  Just guessing.  I wonder what it would do if you used
the f option instead of the r option in support mode.  I'll keep reading to
see what others have to say on this.
