I had a different notetaker that experienced a catastrophic crash shortly after being scanned by the x ray machines and I had to send it in and have it rebuilt. The motherboard had been fried. So, now, I am reluctant to take any notetaker or PDA traveling with me. I figure if I fly with my MPower, I'll wear it through the metal detector as I walk through, and explain that it is an expensive piece of equipment.

I actually carry both my BrailleNote and the laptop through an airport. i haven't noticed any issues with getting both of the devices into the bin they require everyone to place their equipment into. I haven't had an instance where they asked me to take anything out of its case or to boot it up for any reason. I think if it would cause any damage to any equipment, they would be forced to use different means of scanning devices, even if this means using a visual search. I am pretty sure the machines they use must of gone through numerous amounts of certifications before it was approved, and if it was harmful to anything or anyone they wouldn't be able to use it. So, I don't think there is much to worry about, except for them trying to take your cane away, which is a hassel.

Hi,

When I go through security at airports, I tell them that it is an expensive Braille device. Consistently, that's all I need to say because they are not concerned about it. Laptops are a much bigger hassle because you have to take them out of the cases. I have never had a problem taking a BN through.

This may be a bit off topic, but how do you get the DVS tracks? I
tried, but the only software I have access to makes a .wmv file
in mono, which then has to be translated to .mp3 for space
saving. What do you use that works on your mPower?

Hello All:

First let me tell you that I travel about 14 times per year and
without a
doubt, my MPower travels with me EVERYWHERE!! I carry it either
on its own,
or in my regular tech bag with my laptop and other paraphernalia.
I have
not had any adverse effects on it or any of its components like
cards
(Compact flash or SD).

I usually place it in its own container like my laptop and send
it on
through the X-Ray. If they ask, which is not often, I simply
identify it as
a PDA. I've also heard a rumor that the BrailleNote is actually
listed on
their documentation as a blindness aid. I don't have any
verification of
this yet.

Quite honestly, I can't imagine traveling without it. I usually
will
download a book or newspaper just prior to takeoff from Bookshare
and always
have a couple of DVS movie sound tracks with me. Who needs
in-flight
entertainment anyway.

So, enjoy your MPowered or BrailleNoted travels and don't worry
about it.
hth
Jeff
