You are confused because you do not understand what going on. First, There are several ways to connect to the Internet. There is dial-um and broadband. You know what dial-up is. Broadband includes both cable and DSL. You can also get to the net via a network. Network connections inclode: ethernet wireless and bluetooth.

When you go to an hotel, you can use your ethernet card to connet there. Your friends and family may have broadband connections in their homes and they may also have a network that you can connect to. Some of your friends and family may just have telephones. You will have to ask in order to find what type of connections are available in each place you're going to visit.

Your next problem will be to configure your BrailleNote to meet your needs. My suggestion would be to read the manual on connectivity, and then come back to us for more help.
