OK, Malaina, if I understand what you say here:
"I do have a cable that came with the router but there is no where
to put it in the router I don't think. One end of the cable is in
my dsl modem, the other end is in my laptop."
This says to me that the router isn't connected to anything, which
means you cannot connect to the internet. The wireless router has to
be connected to the DSL modem for it to work. How many ports does
the router have?
By ports, I mean places for cables to plug into.

There should be at least three.
Or, do you know the exact model number of the router? With that, I
could look up the details for you.
