I have been a Braille Note user since January 2001. All I know comes from
the onboard user's guide and experimentation. I listened to the tape made
with my unit in 2001, but I have not listened to the online tutorials,
although I did catch the one about the upcoming 7.2 which I thought was more
a demo than a tutorial. When I need help I get it from the BN itself about
98% of the time, maybe 2% of the time I come to the list.

I had no problems with the information presented on the initial tape or in
chapter one of the online manual.

I did receive a braille manual in 2001, two months after I got the Braille
Note itself. I used the command summary occasionally but never used that
book for the chapter one info since I had been there on the Braille Note
itself.

I guess for me at least I don't see a huge need for space-eating oral
tutorials when I can use the display or the voice on the BN to read the
manual either through the options and user guide option or in the book
reader itself.

I listened to some of the presentations on 7.0 and I kept wanting to speed
up the voice, or say lets get to the point for the most part.

However, I do realize others appreciate the pacing.

You're doing fine insofar as I'm concerned. I suppose what I am attempting
to do is to understand how others feel.
I have been an off and on Braillenote user since July of 2000, and what I've
learned about the product has always come from the users guide and the
excellent help system.

Hi Richard, this is precisely what Chapter One in the User Guide attempts to
do. If we're not succeeding, then this is good feedback.

I believe that the problem is that although all of the information is
readily available in the users guide that for some, some basic step by
step how to information is what is needed.
I personally have no problem learning by reading manuals, but for some,
that is not the best way to learn.
Perhaps a text version of the tutorial that simply lays out some of the
basics of Braille noting in a straight forward manner might be helpful
to deaf blind individuals. It could be placed on the HumanWare web
site, or on the CD that comes with the machine.
In fact, it might facilitate learning for those who are not good audio
learners but are overwhelmed by manuals.
I think the users guide is a great tool for those of us who can easily
take advantage of it, but some folks get rather lost in manuals and
need a scaled down approach.

Hi KC, it is completely unrealistic to expect us to stop producing audio

material because Deaf Blind people can't access it. What it is realistic

to expect is that we will make the same information available by other
means that are accessible to Deaf Blind people, and this is already
happening. So I'm at a loss to understand what precisely the problem is.

We have no way of knowing when we ship a product that is all boxed up,
whether the customer receiving it is Deaf Blind or not. So if the audio
material isn't useful, it can be ignored. All the same information is in

the User Guide on board the unit.

Hi Jonathan,

I don't mean to be difficult. However, I'm on a several
Listserves with folks who are deaf-blind. More than a few are Bn
users. Perhapsyou should be aware there is a general sense of
dismay at the fact HW offers a tutorial on CD rom that is
audio only. I mention this, because you indicate here that you
are mindful of the needs of consumers who are deaf-blind.
