Kathleen, There are two kinds that are used: Voice over IP (VOIP), and text (or SMS). VOIP is used to talk to somebody over Internet. Text messaging allows you to chat using text (speech menas that the text message will be read aloud), so, in this case, it is text, with BrailleNote reading the actual message to you.
