Hi, all. A blind guy in our agency retired, and bequeathed his BrailleNote
to a blind co-worker of mine. It is, like my unit at work, a classic, which
was upgraded to 4.01, but has something like 3.03 burned into rom. I tried
to help my co-worker learn how to type on the unit, how to access the
on-board manual, and a few other things, but she was pretty confused and
frustrated. So I figured I'd see if I could send her the manual by email,
so she could read it on her computer while playing with the BrailleNote, so
she wouldn't have to constantly be trying to remember how to access the
manual. I dug out my superdisk (remember those, you old-timers?), copied
the manual text files from the Keysoft drive onto it, and proceeded to go
through and send her the most important ones. They were .kwt files, but on
my computer I just told Windows which program to use to open them, and they
opened and read just fine with Wordpad. I figured I'd help her do the same
on her computer. But when she tried to open the attachments, she was asked
"convert from what?", and not what program she wanted to use to open them.
So there's something that works differently on her computer than on mine.
So I'm wondering a couple things: First of all, is there a 4.01 manual on
the Humanware site? I didn't see it when I was just there. Secondly, is
there a way to get the manual to her in a .txt format, or some kind of
format that her system can recognize? Or is there a way to fix that
"convert from" message her computer is giving so that I can copy the files
over from my floppy and/or PC to hers?"
It will be so much easier when she's comfortable enough with the on-board
manual, but we're not there yet, so she's just randomly giving commands and
seeing what will happen. The guy who retired didn't leave her the Getting
Started info in Braille or tape, and I don't have mine anymore either, since
I've been using BrailleNotes since 2000. I've thought of bringing my
Getting Started CD for the mPower to work, but that might confuse her even
more if she hears things talked about that she can't do.
So any help anyone can offer to help me get the manual to her in a .txt or
.doc file will be greatly appreciated.
