Eugene, Chaman and list,
I've changed the subject to reflect its
content.
I have listed some common acronyms that we
use everyday. I guess it is time for me to
reintroduce it, since Eugene requested this.
A list of acronyms, its proper term, and
definition and examples are shown. These
were divided to categories:
1. Acronyms that are used in computer
memory:
CF (CompactFlash): a type of memory card
about the size of a matchbook. It was first
introduced in 1994 by Sandisk. Currently, it
is widely availible. It can be obtained in
capacities of 64, 128, 256, 512 MB, 1, 2, 4,
6, 8, 12 and 16 GB.
SD (Secure Digital): another memory card
format that is used on digital cameras,
PDA's, and alike. It is found on mPower
units. It is size of a small postage stamp.
The unique feature of this format is that it
has a protective switch. It can be obtained
in capacities of 64, 128, 256, 512 MB, 1 and
2 GB.
PC/PCMCIA (Personal Computer/Personal
Computer Memory Card Industry Association):
About the size of a credit card, it is
virtually rare these days. It is rarely used
in memory these days (except for micro
drives), but it is widely used as an
accessory.
RAM (Random Access Memory): This is the
memory that can be "randomly" written and
rewritten. This type of memory is faster
than a hard drive.
ROM (Read-Only Memory): This is the memory
type that is not writable (you can only read
from it). A special type of ROM exists where
you can "rewrite" information that is stored
on this memory. This is called Flash ROM.
2. Words related to memory capacity:
KB (Kilobyte): A unit of information equal to
1,000 characters (1,024 bytes in binary
standard). Used to display file size.
MB (Megabyte): A unit of information that is
equal to 1 million characters (1,048,576
bytes in binary information). Used to
display RAM capacity.
GB (Gigabyte): A unit of information equal to
1 billion characters (1,073,741,824 bytes in
binary). Used to display capacity of a
storage device like hard drives.
3. Terms frequently used by BrailleNote
users:
BN: BrailleNote
KS: KeySoft
SMA: Software Maintenance Agreement
BT: Braille Terminal
QT: Qwerty Terminal
PK: Pocket
4. Connectivity terms:
USB (Universal Serial Bus): A standard
established by USB Implementers' Forum where
many devices can connect to each other with
Plug and Play support (P and P for short).
It is standard these days.
WiFi (Wireless Fidelity, also called IEEE
802.11): A type of wireless standard that is
used to replace wired Ethernet connections.
BT (Bluetooth): A wireless standard aimed at
replacing serial connections.
IE: Internet Explorer (KeyWeb)
5. Shortened email terms:
HTH: "Hope this helps"
BTW: "By the way"
IM: Instant Messenger
If anybody has further terms, you can
contribute to this thread. I hope this
information may help you.
Regards,
Joseph
