Because fairness is essential, I can tell you that I know three people
personally who have had entire compact flash cards rendered useless by
a
Braillenote. The advice that HumanWare furnishes is that you should
never leave a compact flash card in your unit while you are performing
any kind of reset.

What you report surprises me. I use that product and have absolutely
never lost data from a Flash card. Regarding your other concern, yes,
they do provide Sprite Backup, it came on your program CD.

Do others really have this chronic problem with losing data? I have
only
occasionally (4 or 5 times) lost data. This could not be said of the
competitions product which killed information that was on removable
cards.
Also, the only answer the competition gives is to use sprite backup
utility
so you can boot from the backup. This product was not (and still not
to my
knowledge) provided to the customer. It was something I had to
purchase
even though it was their answer for a bug fix.
Personally, I have not heard of this great number of people losing
great
numbers of data but would definitely be interested in how many
actually
do
have this problem.

Wait just a minute here. I think it's extremely premature to
start jumping to conclusions. Yes, I'll agree that it's most
unfortunate whenever one loses valuable data, but to take it a
step further and suggest that this is a chronic problem with the
BN family of products is just plain uncalled for. I for one have
yet to come across a situation involving my voicenote wherein I
have inexplicably lost data. I have owned my current unit for a
little more than a year now, and my previous unit I had since
2003. As distasteful as some of you may find my proposition, I
suggest that we resist the urge to make the assertion that this
is a chronic problem with the BN, and likewise refrain from
suggesting to those that perhaps were thinking of purchasing a
braillenote or voicenote that they should think twice before
doing so. While I feel for those persons that have experienced
the aforementioned problem, I will say to those of you that are
considering purchasing one of these units, that I personally have
never experienced the previously referenced problem, and I
encourage you not to decide against the BN predicated upon the

Actually, Chris, I have to strongly disagree. though what you
say about PCs is true, that happense *very rarely. If the BN
frequently loses data, especially if there's been no crash of the
device, that is an unacceptable flaw. If you can't mostly rely
on your device to preserve data, why bother owning it in the
first place.
I currently use a competitor's product--the one that came out in
fall of 2003. I can't say I *never lose data, but if I do, it's
because the unit has locked up and a cold reset must be
performed, so I know that any data that hasn't been backed up is
lost. I'm on this list because I was considering purchasing a
BN. If what Mary Ellen describes is a pervasive problem with
these units, I think that just took the BN right off the table
for me. I'll tolerate lots of bugs in a product, but data loss
is definitely not one of them.

P.S. I also you Sprite Backup with my current unit. I know the
BN has some kind of backup feature, at least I think it does. It
would be a good thing if that program could allow you to back up
your data to a storage card.

computers can have glitches, one of which is to lose work that
you thought
you last saved. There are a handful of reasons why this would be
the case,
power failure being one of them. So I guess it's the same with

BrailleNote; the operating system, Windows CE/Keysoft, must have
glitches in
them that occur from time to time, and one of these is to erase a
whole
document despite you saved it. So my advice? Consider backing up
the
document to some removable device, so that should you lose it
you've always

an mPower? As
I say I am sorry to hear what's happened, but it's just one of
these things
and therefore I hope from this message you'll take my advice and

start addressing the issue of these machines loosing huge
amounts of
material. I am even talking about material which has
specifically been
saved and the machine just kicks it out. The strange thing is

This has been a problem with the Braille Note since I have had
one in

And I am extremely surprised this has not come up more often but
it has
not.
Secondly as far as batteries are concerned, if some of you will
remember
Fs came out in about 2003 or very early 2004 with a pacmate
Braille &
Speak which had a user replacible battery. Ok they went back
and did a
total makeover of the machine which came out in the fall of 2004
and guess
what? The battery was not user replacible. Why? Because there
had been
numerous problems with the earlier model of the pacmate Bns
because of
that user replacible batteries.
I have no doubt technology has come a long way since then and I
too would
love to change my battery out but we have to realize hw can only
pack so
much in an upgrade at any given time and they have only so many
people in
development.
In a perfect world there would be that one perfect machine with
everything
for everyone but alas, this is 2007 the world is not a perfect
world and
now you have myriads of machines out there to choose from, so
you do not
like the features of one machine, go to its competitor and
perhaps you
will find what you want from them.
