The blind are forced to pay mor than the sighted for cell phones as well as
notetakers. I bought a MotorolaQ and the MSS SmartPhone and I had it
installed and paid a fee for that. I wanted complete accessibility which
the LG phones don't have. This phone is supposed to last me for two years
and it had better last!
Accessibility and small market is why we have to pay more. HW knows that
for most of us speech alone isn't the answer--we need a braille display
because braille is the preferred reading and editing mode. They think we'll
lie down quietly and plunk out more money for a new display, but they should
think again. People aren't going to spend money for a display every year or
two. I bought my transplant in 2005 and it's too soon to buy another
display.

So humanware will also become part of our throw-away culture? And anyhow,
a cell phone costs $100 or thereabouts, unless of course you choose to get
a more expensive one with more bells and whistles. But one has no choice
in the price of these note takers, and the idea of spending $6000 every 5
years or so to replace the Braille Note is unacceptable and indicates to
me that the machines are not very well made. It's not only a matter of new
technology, it's a matter of duragbility, stability and adaptability.
In short, these things are simply too expensive to require such
frequent replacement. Can you imagine the outrage if drivers were forced
to replace their cars every 5 years?
