Dave, The issue of the Accessible note taking devices prices being 4x or 5x prices of Main Stream PDAs is a direct result of supply and demand. If the market in the blindness market was equal to that of the sighted market then that will be the day we will see Accessible note takers being priced under $1000, or a comparable price.
It is recommended to use a stylist or some other device to perform a Reset on the mPowers or Classics. The issues of these bugs in various applications like KeyWeb and other such applications are very tricky as sometimes they don't occur all of the time and there is the complexity of the issue being in the operating system or KeySoft itself. The key in getting these bugs squashed is to have the exact directions to reproduce them and to have as much detail as possible. For example, I pressed I from the Main Menu for KeyWeb, then entered an URL, then clicked on this, then this occurred. I think many of these issues along with the document issues will be resolved with an upgrade to the Operating System. When you can get a main-stream pda with Mobile office and a gps navigation system in the one package for only $600 aus, it highlights how expensive it is to be blind. The most aggravating thing about my new bt is that the reset button is even harder to use than the one on the old unit -- but I have to use it even more than I used to, especially using the browser. I hope Kevin and the other beta testers concentrate on that module in the future. Some times, the crash is so bad, it disables the braille display. It takes quite a while -- several varied resets to correct the problem -- I nearly fainted the first time, was just about to pack it up and send it off to the menders. I would like to see better error trapping, with a message or even a set of tones that would enable us to provide feedback to Humanware developers. Well, the price of upgrades is $195 USD per upgrade. I am not sure if it is possible to perform the upgrade from 3.7 to 6.1 by yourself, but it will be possible from 6.1 onwards. Just looking at the upgrades from 6.1 to 7.5, it is around $1000. This is not accounting for the upgrade of 3.7 to 6.1, which 6.1 takes two upgrade counts because it is a software as well as an operating system upgrade. When I performed a search on upgrade on the HumanWare page, I found information pertaining to the 6.1 upgrade through the 7.5 upgrade but nothing prior to 6.1. I would recommend visiting the HumanWare page and searching for, "upgrade." I would recommend phoning into the HumanWare Australia Office to get the exact quote on the upgrade. The CompactFlash card that is in the Classic units is still current but is slowly being replaced with SD cards, cards that hold as much as CompactFlash cards but are the size of a postage stamp and use less power as well as having a write-protection switch. Hope this helps Kevin Kevin -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Ross McGregor Sent: Sunday, December 30, 2007 9:35 PM To: voice note Subject: [Braillenote] classic qt questions Hey Kevin and Scott and cathie, thanks for your replies. Yeh Kevin, i'm sure the mpower is a very good unit, but I can't afford that at the moment. I noticed there was a 7.5 classic upgrade on the humanware web site, so was wondering about doing that, but couldn't find out its extra features compared with the 3.7, or its cost. I presume it will update from 3.7 ok? And I don't know if they make any hardware mods to the classic when you get that 7.5 version. Is interesting the mpower is 1995 USD, but in oz is $3500. is a big jump. Are their different types of cf card and can you tell me is this cf 1 still current or is now outdated technology. I agree the mpower is the way to go, and hopefully I will be able to get one in the near future. Thanks again, Ross. ___ Replies to this message will go directly to the sender.
