Hi Nick,
No. Here's a little overview (perhaps yet
another "secret"):
Whenever the user makes changes to the
settings under BrailleNote, it is written to
a file called keysoft.ksd located at
Dictionaries folder under Flash Disk. When
it is gone, the next time the BrailleNote
boots, it will search for this file. If it
finds that it is not there, it copies from
ROM image that is burnt on the BrailleNote
(there's no simple word to describe it). The
default ksaid contains settings that were
customized at the factory. When this
happens, speech reverts to KeyNote Gold and
any settings stored under Braille Options,
Keyboard Settings, Review Voice and other
locations will go back to default settings.
This does not mean going back to KeySoft 6.1.
Once a ROM image has been written to
read-only location, it cannot be altered.
But why the settings can be changed? There is
a special ROM called EEPROM (Electronic
Erasable Programmable Read-only Memory).
This memory is designed so that it can be
programmed again and again. Once the program
has been written to this medium, it cannot be
altered unless reprogrammed. The evolved
version is Flash ROM, where the ROM image is
stored in Flash Memory (typically a
computer's BIOS is stored there). On an
embedded devices such as BrailleNote, the
Windows CE operating system is stored in
Flash ROM (thus, no need to be altern unless
an act called "flashing" is carried out -
complete rewrite of the ROM using an external
device). This is the reason why an upgrade
requires a storage card, and this might be
the reason why Andy Riden said that it would
be easier (on the mPower) to update the OS
(one simply needs to put a new ROM image file
on the SD or CF card and rewrite Flash ROM
with this new image, thereby changing the
OS).
I have no time to go into details at the
moment (maybe someone from HumanWare or other
"experts" will be able to sort this out for
me). I've got some vacational AP Stats
homework to do and I'm waiting from colleges
regarding my acceptance status.
Cheers,
Joseph P.S. Was this explanation simple for
you?

Does that mean degrading to ks 6.1 or
something?

Hi John,
These files under Dictionaries are for
working with KeySoft (especially when using
foreign braille codes).
Don't mess with keysoft.ksd - deleting it
will result in ALL your settings going back
to factory defaults (few exceptions exists).
The files under Dictionaries folder on Flash
Disk is part of KeySoft ROM image. Once this
folder is gone, the next time you reset your
unit, it will come back.
Cheers,
Joseph

Subject: [Braillenote] Erasing files
On the Flash Disk there are many files that I
have either no interest in or don't know what
they are for. I got the Braille Note used
and these files came with it. Some of them
are:
In the Dictionary folder
visuaide
c b i s f 8-dot cbfr1252 embosserbraille
table
c b i s f
c b i s
deutsch
emaildatafolder.sys
french canadian computer braille table
italian computer braille table
keysoft 6-dot english braille table
keysoft.ksd
tbrf2007
and many others
Any help will be appreciated.
John
