Hi Orhan,
I don't see why you shouldn't be able to do this for Turkish, as I have done
something similar for Czech, which also contains a number of non-standard
characters. For more information on how to assign the dot and key
combinations to the non-standard unicode characters, read the "Extended
Characters" Topics in the BrailleNote manual. If you follow the
instructions, you shouldn't cause any damage to your existing Braille
tables, as once you have changed the key or dot combination assigned to a
particular character, a new Braille table is created automatically. It will
be listed as "Custom USA" or "Custom UK", depending on which computer
Braille table you were using when you changed the dot or key assignment.
I've been using my Czech Braille table for a few years now and it works
fine, but I have a few warnings:
1. The last time I tried to print a document in Czech directly from the
BrailleNote, the non-standard Czech characters did not print correctly.
This may have been rectified by now, but I wouldn't bet on it. :-) If I
create a document in Czech on the BrailleNote and transfer it to the
computer, or send it as an e-mail attachment, it displays and prints
perfectly.
2. If I'm using Keyweb, Czech web pages don't always display the extended
characters correctly on the BN. I suspect that this has something to do
with the way in which the BrailleNote handles (or fails to handle) the
encoding of the web page, but I don't know much about that and I'm just
speculating.
3. I've never tried to send an e-mail in Czech from the BN, but I doubt
whether it would work properly, as I don't think you can change the encoding
within Keymail. I may be quite wrong about that, though.
4. If I've scanned a document in Czech on the computer and I want to read
it on the BN, I have to be very careful about how I save it, otherwise the
extended characters are not preserved on the BN, even though they look fine
on the computer.
I'm using an mPower BT32 build 27, but my Braille table was originally
created on a BT Classic. I'm afraid I know nothing about Turkish, but I
hope this will be of some help. I'm sending it to the list in case it's of
interest to anyone else. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me
privately.
All the best,
Nicky

Subject: [Braillenote] creating a non-standard braille table
hello list, recently memory seems to say to me that i 'could' create a
non-standard braille table.
is this possible? i need to get the turkish dot combinations on my BN for my
exam. just computer braille will do, with some accents. also, i want it to
show the charicters on the display.
i could probably make one, i'm not asking instructions just wonderring if it
is possible so i don't waste time trying to figure out something. on the
braillenote.
