Would this work for both the Ipad and Iphone, since
there sort of the same thing? I know the Ipad has a
lock button, not sure about the Iphone though. I also
know both devices have bluetooth. Josh

Hi all,
Ever since I got my iPod Touch, I have hesitated to
carry it with
me
because of the need for headphones. I know the apex
can act as a display, but I always thought that pairing
initially if either
the
iPod or apex had been off would be a huge pain. Thanks
to
someone over
on the aiphone list, I now know that this is not the
case. You
can
leave speech off on the iPod and pair, provided
bluetooth is on
on the
iPod (which does not seem to be a huge battery drain).
Do this:
1. On the iPod, with speech on or off, lock the unit
by pressing
the
lock button.
2. On the Apex, enter braille terminal mode and select
bluetooth
as
the port. Make sure bluetooth is on as the apex
sometimes will
not
turn it on automatically.
3. You will see a blank display on the apex. Now
unlock the
iPod by
pressing the home or lock button. After ten seconds or
so, the
current
time will appear on the apex. At this point, find the
unlock
button by
touching the bottom of the screen, flicking, or using
thumb keys
or
space-4 to move forward by item. Once there, activate
it and
type in
your security code, if you have one set. You may not
be able to
see
what you are writing, but just use a number sign and
the standard literary numbers, and do not pause in
writing, and it should
work.
I want to stress that, despite my first thoughts, this
can be
done
completely silently. No need to dig out earbuds for
just five
seconds,
just pull out the iPod, put the apex in terminal mode,
unlock,
and
away you go. Of course, if bluetooth is turned off on
the iPod,
this
will not work; you must have already paired the apex
with the
iPod
through the Braille option of the VoiceOver settings.
Once
paired
once, though, the two will remain paired unless you
tell the iPod
to
forget the Apex or, maybe, if you reset the iPod. I am
not yet
sure
what happens if you reset the apex.
