The formatting symbols are created using the computer braille dollar sign
followed by the letter p, f, and pf. Dots 1-2-4-6 in this case is not the e
d sign. You are right that $p means new line, or hard return. $f means
page break, like a soft page break. But $pf means new page, cause by a hard
page break which has been manually inserted into the document.
By the way, $l means a soft line break.
If you don't want to see formatting characters in automatic mode, you can
turn them off using the options menu.
