Where on the hw site is the list of commands for controlling the iPhone that you were talking about?

They are working fine in the regular mode. In the terminal mode, they won't.

Are you sure the thumbkeys are on? While not in terminal, hit space-o, then f to toggle them on or off. If the bn says "thumb keys off", do
it again to turn them back on.
