Terry,

You wouldn't want that alarm going off in your office at its default setting.  
It's kind of a series of loud beeps. Of course, it wouldn't matter if you had 
your earphones on, now would it, the ones that come with the unit?   If you 
choose to use it, without earphones, test it and set the volume.
