It did say it was a reader for compact cards, but there is no way that card
is going to fit into that slot.

Hi, Keith. Is the slot for the card half the size in width? If the package 
says it is a cf card reader, you should be fine. There are also readers for 
sony memory sticks and another smaller memory module I can't remember the 
name of. The only other type of card is what is called a smart card. It is 
used in some cameras and is much thinner than a flash card.
