Dear Paul,

There are two kinds of "line breaks". The dollar l is a soft line break.
This is created when a word wraps to a new line. The dollar p is a hard
line break or hard return. This is created when you press the enter key.
The manual calls the soft line breaks "line breaks" and it calls the hard
line breaks "new lines."

You can change the margins and make your lines longer. This will remove
some of the soft line breaks.

In the old days, these things were called "soft returns" and "hard returns."

I hope I have cleared things up for you.
