Rose,
Yes, you can shut it off.
Either while it's ringing or in the pauses between ringing cycles.
If it's ringing, you don't even have to turn the unit on.  All you need to do 
is press c for cancel, and the bn will say "Alarm canceled.
If you turn on your bn between ringing cycles, you will get the alarm options 
menu and you can hit c to cancel.
