Enda, ROM is Read-Only-Memory, and is the kind of memory into which the keysoft system is burned, what you have left when you do a reset with 4-5-6.
RAM, or Random-Access-Memory is the kind of memory like what you have in flash memory. In most devices, this memory contains the memory that goes away when you turn off the device. BrailleNote keeps RAM turned on by keeping it connected to the battery all the time. The BrailleNote uses part ROM and part RAM for the Keysoft drive. This is partly why the charge on your battery goes down a few percent even though you don't use the BN for a couple of days. How does ROM access memory and how is that different from RAM? I think people need examples they can relate to to unersdand. For example, what is the real difference between the flash disk and the keysoft disk? What should be stored where and why?
