Hi Lisa, The flash card reader attaches to the USB port on your PC. It allows you to transfer files back and forht between your PC and another device, such as the Braillenote, which can read and write to a CF card. It is helpful when you have, for example, a file on your PC that you want to transfer to your Braillenote. If you never plan to do this, you won't need the card reader, but, you have heard a lot about the product key that you will need in order to install Keysoft 6.1. You will need to download this key and transfer it to the CF card containing the upgrade, in some way. Using the card reader is a way to do this.
