Beth,
If you used a computer with a scanner and something happened to your pc, and
you hadn't backed up your files, something that is easy to do with a pc, you'd
be in the same place you'd be if you used a stand alone
machine and something happend to it and you hadn't backed up the files. those
stand alone devices are really computers. They just don't give the user access
to the full functionality of the computer that is at the
heart of the system, complete with hard drive, which is where the scanned
documents are stored, just as files are stored on a pc. If you're willing to
pay the premium price for what is essentially a computer and scanner
without the ability to use the computer for anything but scanning, then by all
means. But these stand alone machines are no less prone to the problem of lost
files than a pc would be. And backing up may not be as
easy or convenient as it is to back up files from a pc.
