Not always, I have had problems with doing that, usually have to save as
RTF to get the files to load correctly.  I just spent an afternoon and
evening a couple of weeks ago transferring several files that amounted
to about 180 pages.

You could also save them as an earlier version of Word.  Then your
formatting will remain.
