As a student and fairly new Braille note user, I find some of these comments
about failures in the 6.1 upgrade particularly disturbing. PDI has the
reputation of releasing products that are stable and thoroughly tested.
However, I do not understand why no one would be informed of something so
major as a microdrive or disk drive that is no longer supported, and an
E-mail system that works sometimes. It's hard for me to believe that with
the thorough testing of this long awaited upgrade that was supposed to have
been done, that these problems were not caught and addressed before the
upgrade went to mass distribution.

The biggest problem is that once this upgrade is made, the ROM of the unit
is reburned so the user can't go back. So, once upgraded, we get the new
features, but are stuck with the bugs. Perhaps a halt should be
made to the upgrading process until a cleaner beta is done and these
upgrades have been THOROUGHLY tested. I think a patch is definitely an
option, but
it will have to be implemented soon.

Jonathan, Dean, and other PDI representatives are very quick to point out
the features of these excellent products, however, some thought needs to be
given
to informing the loyal users of these products about potential issues in
upgrading. We've been promised this upgrade since June 29th and were told
that it would be released in the last quarter of 2004. We were told that the
delay in releasing the upgrade was due
to beta testing and wanting to put out a quality "Bug free" product. Now,
while every new upgrade has it's problems, these seem like some very large
issues that should have been caught in the beta process.

We know that PDI is in the business of selling products, but when an upgrade
of this nature is so sweeping and irreversible, you have to warn the users
of potential problems that may be encountered.
If these things had been advertised, I believe that lots of people would
have waited on the upgrade until these issues were resolved.

Finally, I just found out that I have been billed for and will be receiving
my upgrade soon. When I call PDI, they can't even tell me where my upgrade
is in the process or when it will be shipped. I am quite nervous about
installing it due to the trouble others have been having with it. I'd just
like to know how others are feeling about this and would like to hear from
PDI with assurances and, more importantly, a reasonable time table as to
when these problems will be fixed. Thanks for your time and responses.

Sincerely,
Melissa Keys

Subject: [Braillenote] 6.1 and PDI

Hello floks,
I am appalled at these things:
1. having one's credit card charged the day the order for 6.1 was placed
although the order didn't come in until six months later.
2. Not being told that 6.1 lacked the ability to allow one to use their
superdisk drive.
3. the fact that 6.1 lacks bluetooth support.
4. that PDI chose not to inform people of these things when and where they
occurred.
5. the lack of communications between PDI and it's customers.
I would've contested the charge to my credit card immediately! You don't
charge me until you ship the goods, otherwise I contest!
I certainly don't understand these issues. Now I know why people are
anxious about their upgrades arriving! they've been charged!
I believe the list deserves explanations of these tactics.
thank you.
Isaac
