Um, they haven't been automatically deleted, even after deleting the email.
They still are there.  At least, that's how it appears.

Jane, if I understand you correctly, you wish to sometimes not
immediately delete the attachments.  If you keep or save the email, the
attachments are automatically saved therewith, unless you have
deliberately deleted them from the email.  When you choose to delete the
email, the attachments are automatically deleted with it.

I go through my emails, erase those I don't need ... go through the long
and
tedious--and often forgotten how to--process of erasing email
attachments.
I also go through and erase any other files I don't need at the moment.

Just a thought:  Is there any way to make it easier to erase email
attachments after the fact?  I mean, I don't necessarily want to erase
the
attachment right away, but later on would like to.  It takes forever to
get
it all done. :)
