Hi,
I tried and failed, though found some helpful info online.

Best website I found for doing this is:
http://www.sourdoughhome.com/startermyway.html

Here's a freebie you may want to try: Carl Griffith Sourdough Page
home.att.net/~carlsfriends

Here's what else I learned:
-Sour dough includes a bacteria (similar to yogurt) and a yeast. I
only got the bactertia, and it was became bitter (probably on counter
for too long)
-Starter is living organism and I have the impression it's like a pet:
you gotta feed it and take out regularly and keep it from getting sick.
-Sour dough starter is an ingredient in itself and changes recipes
-Rather than reinventing the wheel, use existing starter and then do
your own culture
-Starter a good option if you're willing to tweak recipe and use it
regularly.

Sour dough is the one kind of culture I can afford, but no good advise,
from me only good luck, anders
