The tips should go on and off by hand; the only exception is when you've put a tip on a hot wand and then try to remove it when the machine is cold, it will be a lot harder. A quick jet of steam will heat it up again and let it come off easily. I put one tip on that uses a different thread, and it was hard the first time and easy after that.
If you're having that much difficulty, something is wrong.
