Sounds like it might be the p-stat.. Keep the cover off and watch if the water is being blown out of the safety valve from the boiler it is probably the p-stat . Especially if you have never changed it out. I suggest you replace it with a Jaeger p-stat much better than the original one. Check the archives for p=stat replacement.
