That large chrome tube under the brew group that the water comes out of is
removable. If you remove it you will find a "brass plunger" that is used to
release the water into the drip tray. You may find that the top of it is broken
off. Please take a look at it and let me know if you need a replacement.
We just found that in another machine with the same symptoms.

I agree sounds like an obstruction in the drain tube. Try running a stiff
wire up the tube to unclog it. It is also probably time to descale.
