I think the "button" under discussion is actually a little red pencil-lead sized plastic "stick" that should be poking out of a little pipe ... it looks like a red plastic ballpoint pen tip poking out.
If you tip your machine around a lot, they occasionally fall out ... especially if it has fired off and needs to be pushed back down to reset. If you find a little empty pipe hole about the size of a retracted ballpoint pen, try sticking a stiff something (skinned half inch of #12 wire (or a tooth pick? but don't snap it off) and push it down firmly.
