TR, If this is the first time you recharged the water softener since new two years ago, I certainly would not think it has been overused! You can get replacement ones from WLL and other dealers for about $20. I can't direct you to one right now, but there is a guide for when they should be recharged. It depends on your water softness; how much water is used per day; and then recommends how many days the charged softener should be good for.
