Even if removing the accumulated chrome bits from the grouphead screen fixes the chrome problem with the grouphead, it still sheds no light on why I am having the same issue with the steam wand.
Loss of chrome is both not uncommon and not a problem. Keeping chrome from all the places it's not needed is an extra cost that is commonly not spent. The plating shop makes sure all the places that need good looking chrome are properly prepared and the rest gets whatever sticks. Sometimes the stress of de-scaling will loosen some of that and for sure, the act of descaling raised your awareness level. I might suggest take the steam wand off and cleaning the inside of the tube with a pipe cleaner or by pulling small pieces of a green scrubbie through with strong string.
The boiler is not chromed that I remember so any chrome in the steam wand should come from the wand or the valve.
