I had a portafilter gauge that indicated that the built in gauge was 2 bar high, but I had no way to know if either one was correct. So I spent a fair amount of money buying a larger gauge. I forget what the accuracy certification was, but it was enough that I thought it would be helpful. If I recall correctly it was calibrated in PSI and bar. I spent a great deal of effort and some money finding the fittings that would adapt this gauge to the threads on the bottom of the portafilter, in a manner that would permit me to support this rather large and heavy gauge. The result was that the portafilter gauge I obtained from WLL agreed with my special gauge, so I concluded they were both correct and the built in gauge was the one that was wrong.

2 bar high; 3 bar low. That's a huge range. Did you guys use a portafilter pressure gauge to get a better reading? It seems like the built-in gauge is pretty worthless.

In the archives is some information I submitted maybe 2 years ago. I established that my pressure gauge read 2 bar high.

Mine was 3 bar low. :-)
