Hi Pete,
After watching this closely many many times, I concluded that Ira was right and 
that it is just the pump switching over to fill the steam boiler as it gets 
depleted, then switching back to the brew cycle.  I can't say for sure if this 
changed from new, i.e. if the sensor for the steam boiler has gotten more 
sensitive, etc.  Also have never figured out if it makes any difference to the 
quality of the shot--it's not dramatic in any case, but may be a little better 
when you just pull a shot without using steam at the same time.

One obvious solution is to pull your shot either before or after steaming, but 
that was unacceptable to me, since it defeats one of the main purposes of a 
double boiler machine.
