Hi Phillip-- I posted about this a while back, but more about the fact that it's pretty much impossible to clean a screen thoroughly, and it should be treated as a disposable part. I replace my screen every six months or so, and the gasket more like every 12 months.
To get the gasket and screen out, it's easier if the machine is hot. With the PF out, I use a small-to-medium flat-blade screwdriver, turned on edge, in the two places where there are cutouts for the PF ears. With the blade vertical, the bottom corner of the screwdriver blade is touching the screen side, and the upper side of the screwdriver shaft is touching the group head. Push hard enough that the screwdriver dents into the screen side--that is your purchase point. Pry the tip of the screwdriver downward and the screen will move a little. Repeat on the other side. You may have to do this 2 or 3 times per side, but it will pull the screen and the gasket every time, even with an old, hard gasket, because the screen sides are flared and fit into a matching recess in the gasket, so when the screen comes out, the gasket has to follow. As an aside, even though this dents the side of the screen, in a pinch, the screen will still work fine and can be used as a backup. This is a very easy procedure, and does not risk damage to your group head. It is much easier if you do it regularly, but even after more than a year, it's a quick and painless approach. I'll try to get a video posted. When you go to fit the new screen and gasket, be sure you have the orientation of the gasket correct, and fit it to the screen. Wet them and push both into place, and use the PF with no gasket to push straight up on them. At some point, you'll be able to get the PF ears into the head, and then twist to seat them further. Remove the PF, add the basket, and lock it in again to seat them the rest of the way. The whole thing takes about 5 minutes, but you'll want to use your group brush and cafiza to clean under the screen and gasket while they're out.
