I think it is the diameter, not the thickness. The reason I think this is that if I insert just the gasket, without the screen, it fits perfectly. In terms of thickness, the bottom surface of the gasket, in this case, is just a hair below the rim of the housing it fits into. But when inserted with the screen, the surface of the gasket is two hairs above the rim. I don't think it is the thickness of the lip of the screen that is causing this difference. I think it is the outer diameter of the screen which prevents the gasket from compressing enough to slide into place.

Of course, I'm just guessing based on my observations, but it seems like either the screen is slightly too large in outer diameter or the gasket is too large in inner diameter.

By the way, the gasket is stamped with an 8 (or maybe "8mm", I can't quite remember) so I think it is trying to be the right thickness. I don't know what the manufacturing tolerances are for these parts. And I don't have calipers, unfortunately. Maybe I should pick some up.

If it were me, I'd be putting calipers on the gasket. They come in differing thicknesses, and I wonder if they gave you an 8.5 or a 9 instead of an 8. Maybe another thing to check.

Mark: It is true that the new gasket is thicker than the old, dried out one. And it is true that the portafilter handle is "seating" earlier than the old one. These are not unexpected. But this seems much different from when the machine was new. It feels like the wings are barely moving into the slots (although the portafilter feels solidly in place and does not wiggle.) And, after two+ weeks of use, the situation hasn't improved.

Ben: No problem. I didn't take any offense at all to what you wrote. I deal with "bug reports" all the time and realize how important it is to get the description of the problem clearly stated.

Thanks everyone for your help. I have a call with the service department this afternoon and we'll see what comes from it. I'll post an update when there is something useful to report.

Hey Peter,
Wasn't trying to bust your chops. Each time I read "basket" in your original, I was picturing the part that holds coffee. I just wanted to clarify that I now understand what you meant and that hopefully my response made sense too. No offense intended.

best,
bmc

Have I got it correct?

Sorry about the confusion. I think of the screen as just,
        well, the
screen itself not what it is attached to. But let me
        restate things with
        the proper terminology.

The screen is a bit loose when there is no gasket. That is,
        I can fully
insert the screen and then slide it back and forth. Not too
        far, but
        there is slack there.

The gasket was inserted with beveled side up.

That gasket and screen were installed about 2 weeks ago and
        I lived with
the handle at 7:30 to see if it would gradually seat fully
        but I didn't
notice any change after that time.

I used a portafilter without basket to push the gasket up
        as far as I
could. Then I added the basket to the portafilter and
        pushed again with
it. (When I say "push" I mean that I inserted the
        portafilter and
rotated it with the wings in their slots.

The previous time that I inserted this new gasket and
        screen I applied
plenty of force with all kinds of blunt instruments but
        nothing would
        make it budge.

The machine works and does not leak. I was hoping for
        something closer
        to 6 o'clock though.

        Thanks for your reply.
