No obsession over 6 o'clock position.
However, at the 7:30 position the wings aren't fully engaged and that doesn't seem good.
I'd settle for 6:30 or even 6:45 ;-)

WHY are you obsessing over "6 o'clock"??

    Hey Peter,
Wasn't trying to bust your chops. Each time I read "basket" in
your original, I was picturing the part that holds coffee. I just
wanted to clarify that I now understand what you meant and that
hopefully my response made sense too. No offense intended.

    best,

It sounds like the new gasket is thicker than the old one (which
would make sense) and that the portafilter handle is "seating"
earlier than the old one. Which would also make sense.

    Have I got it correct?

Sorry about the confusion. I think of the screen as just,
            well, the
screen itself not what it is attached to. But let me
            restate things with
            the proper terminology.

The screen is a bit loose when there is no gasket. That
            is, I can fully
insert the screen and then slide it back and forth. Not
            too far, but
            there is slack there.

The gasket was inserted with beveled side up.

That gasket and screen were installed about 2 weeks ago
            and I lived with
the handle at 7:30 to see if it would gradually seat
            fully but I didn't
notice any change after that time.

I used a portafilter without basket to push the gasket up
            as far as I
could. Then I added the basket to the portafilter and
            pushed again with
it. (When I say "push" I mean that I inserted the
            portafilter and
rotated it with the wings in their slots.

The previous time that I inserted this new gasket and
            screen I applied
plenty of force with all kinds of blunt instruments but
            nothing would
            make it budge.

The machine works and does not leak. I was hoping for
            something closer
            to 6 o'clock though.

            Thanks for your reply.
            Peter
