I don't want to come across as being an expert, although I'd like to be. Cafiza isn't for descaling but rather for backflushing. Dezcal is the product you need for descaling.
As for when and how often to descale, I've heard a few opinions. One is to never descale and rather, prevent the scale from getting into the machine in the first place. You'd do this by installing a filter of some kind which removes scale before going into the unit. I've done this and use a BestMax cartridge system. I think it works very well and it is definitely easy to maintain. I've used an aquarium kit to test for hardness (scale) and there is a big difference between the water going through the filter and not. Difference is the key. You still need SOME minerals for the water to taste good. The BestMax actually has a bypass system where some water bypasses the filter for exactly this reason. So, although the hardness of my water is low, there is still some scale (hardness) going into the machine. I think this means its a losing cause and that no matter what, you are going to get scale in your machine. You can slow it down with a filter but eventually, you need to do something. Descaling a Brewtus is not nearly as easy as say, descaling a tea kettle. There have been various postings here on the best way to do it and I took a bit of a hybrid approach on several. I'm not sure it was the best method or even if it was effective. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Brewtus" group.
