Just an update on the roaster. I ended up getting the quest and installing
a couple of thermocouples, and a phidget and amprobe tmd-56 ,to use with
Artisan. I purchased the Quest because i thought it would be more hands on
and the results would be somewhat repeatable. It took a bunch of roasts to
get drinkable coffee but at this point I'm happier with my roasts than the
whole beans I was buying. The quest now comes with 2 thermometers and in
hindsight I should have used those and my kill-a-watt meter and waited to
add the thermocouples. I had some issues initially with the amprobe meter
and that caused me to order the phidget. I like the Artisan setup with the
phidget better anyway and we use the amprobe meters at work so there was no
loss there. I was initially worried that the small batch size on the Quest
would be an issue but I'm glad it roasts in small batches. I usually roast
2 batches at the time and I always have fresh coffee now. I think if the
batch sizes were larger I'd end up with coffee that was not as fresh as I
wanted and this way I don't. I also have someone that comes by and has a
decaf once a week and now i'm not wasting a lot of expensive decaf. I
always had a problem with decaf going stale really fast and it's nice to be
able to roast it a few days before I'm going to need it and having great
crema when I make lattes. The quest does a great job and with the view port
and the trier it's nice to be able to see the beans through the whole roast
process. I'm using the quest under my range hood and made a vent that
directs the smoke straight up into the fan. It works great and keeps smoke
out of the house. It's a pretty steep learning curve but that said it has
been very predictable and repeatable once I got used to it. The small
batches made the learning process much less expensive as far as beans go.
Thanks to everyone that gave advice and instruction. I really appreciated
the help and it got me pointed in the right direction.
