Thanks, Ira. I just wanted to follow up to let you know that I believe I have the issue solved. I actually put a gasket behind the head of the angled piece, so that it contacts the nut when tightened. I had my wife hold the pipe into place and I added some teflon tape around the connection. I tightened everything up and so far it looks good.
