I don't have a solution along the lines that you are looking for, but I
would recommend a bottomless portafilter to give you more room.  Using my
bottomless portafilter, I have 5 inches of clearance on the Brewtus IV.  It
also allows you to use a 3 shot filter basket if you are so inclined.

A flatter scale lower profile cups might also give you enough room.  For a
super tall mug, I just remove the screen on the drip tray and hold the cup
while pouring the shot.  Not very elegant, but gets the job done for a
travel mug, etc.
