I use a bottomless portafilter, and it leaves plenty of space for a scale
and my espresso cups. That said I’ve been considering the same thing, I
just don’t love the process of moving the scale in and out. I’ve discovered
two answers and I haven’t decided which to pursue yet.

Option 1) buy an Acaia Lunar and integrate it right into the drip tray.
There is a company that makes kits so you can cut your drip tray, snap in
an insert, and the scale will sit right in there. Pros: looks very clean,
excellent scale, pretty much water proof. Cons: expensive, have to
permanently modify a piece that is no longer easy to find a replacement.

Here’s the link to a company that makes the kit:

Option 2: raise the machine high enough to fit the scale beneath the
machine with the display sticking out, use a piece of acrylic or other heat
resistant plastic in the shape of an open sided square to place the cup on,
so it is over the drip tray but actually resting on the scale sitting
safely underneath the machine. Pro’s: cheap, DIY friendly, can use any
scale, easily reversible. Cons: not as clean looking, a little less stable.

Here’s a reddit thread that shows this example, and talks a little about
how to make one:

Report back whatever you end up doing as I’m still debating which direction
to go, and would love to hear some experience with the brewtus’ extremely
narrow but deep driptray.
